In this post, I'll share with you a review of The Count of Monte Cristo. I don't go to theatre/movies often. In fact, years have been known to pass without me seeing a film on the big screen. However, when I saw the poster for the new 2024 The Count of Monte Cristo movie, I knew I simply had to go. I really wanted to see this film, and I didn't even read the reviews or watch the trailer for it. I wasn't even intimidated by the fact it is a three hours long. Afterall, it's based on a rather long novel (that I happen to adore), so I didn't expect it to be short. Now, I usually review books on my blog, not movies. However, perhaps this film review won't come as a surprise to you. I don't know if you have noticed, but I included a few Monte Cristo quotes in my last post . So, you could say this Monte Cristo themed post was sort of teased or at least expected. In the post preceding that one, I mentioned how much I like French movies and recommended...
Split is famous for its Unesco protected Old town that is basically a preserved ancient Roman palace, but there is more to Split then just its ancient part. As a lover of history, I often post about the old parts of Split. As a lover of architecture, I sometimes post about the parts of Split built in the seventies and eighties! If you have been following my blog for a while, you might have come across posts showcasing modern neighbourhoods such as Split 3 (with its University Campus ), Trstenik (with its signature skyscrapers) and Žnjan (that is not restricted to the namesake beach but rather a whole neighbourhood). There is a lot to see in Split. Besides the more well known ancient parts of Split, there are also these award winning modern but still historical neighbourhoods, a triumph of brutalist architecture dating back to the seventies and the eighties. Dinko Kovačić , in particular, is a Split architect whose work continues to amaze me and inspi...
Today I shall review The Island of Missing Trees by Elif Shafak. I was actually gifted this book. What a wonderful present it proved to be! Published in 2021, this postmodern novel follows two story lines and uses framed narration. The Island of Missing Trees tells the life story of a Greek Turkish couple and their adolescent daughter. This novel examines and explores a number of topics such as identity, migration, immigrant life, war trauma, memory, love and family. It's an ambitious novel that examines serious topics with due respect and sensitivity . I read it months ago, but I remember it vividly. Honestly, I cried a lot while reading this novel. It really moved me greatly. In fact, that is probably why it took me this long to finish this book review. I needed to emotionally process the story. The Island of Missing Trees is set in London and Cyprus. The narration isn't chronological . The story jumps back and forth, following ...
Today another post from Dalmatia (region in Croatia). I had already posted about Podstrana here . It is a settlement and municipaty located near Split (in fact only 8 km from this city). Podstrana has about 9000 residens. It is very popular with the tourists. Podstrana has been populated since the prehistoric days. The first people to settle there were Ilyrians, more specifically, an Ilyrian tribe called Pituntini. If you want to see what the appeal is, feel free to browse photographs. When I was there this Sunday, the rainy clouds fought battle with the sun...and this elemental stuggle created those silver shades that Impressionist painters were so crazy about. Standing at the beach, I could see just what they were so fascinated with. Sea has its own magic, powerful and ancient force that is hard to explain with words. Danas još jedna objava iz Dalmacije. Već sam pisala o Podstrani ovdje . To je naselje i općina smještena blizu Splitu (samo 8 km od samog grada). ...
