Do my wings look too big? Jesu li mi krila prevelika?
Do my wings look too big? |
Jesu li mi krila prevelika? |
This little sketch came to be when an idea came to my mind....It was when I thought how ridiculous it would seem if you had an angel second guessing her/his/its (pick the pronoun you prefer) most prominent feature- the wings. However, isn't that what most people do on daily basis? Question and second guess the way they look? Complain about the way their body looks like?
What fascinates me in today's world is that somehow everyone is made to feel bad about the way they look. No matter your body type or size, there is constant presumption that you have to change something in order to look good and be attractive. However, this ideal body seems elusive at best. How can we define it? If one is skinny one is constantly suspected of suffering from some kind of eating disorder. You are always reminded what a bad example you are for others and made to feel guilty....and if you're not skinny than you must be doing something wrong.
We're bombarded with diets, working out regimes and so on...and while I would agree that human body needs some kind of physical activity, I think that the idea that we must train like athletes to be healthy is not quite logical. I read an article that stated that many woman from so called developed countries are actually becoming underweight in an effort to be healthy. Most of them truly believes what they read, they believe that loosing weight will make them healthier. (There are also those that lose weight because they have an eating disorder but that is another issue, albeit a very serious one) Having in mind the amount of people who are starving because they had the misfortune of being born poor, this is a really sad fact.
Therefore, I concluded that this sketch could serve as a lovely metaphor. What we focus on and what we believe in plays an important role in our lives. Ask yourself: "How do I feel? What is my energy level? How am I copying with stress? What can I do to increase the quality of your life? Is there anything I could do to be healthier?" Don't ask yourself: " Is some part of my body too big or too small?" If the question is wrong, the answer cannot be right. Before every answer, there must come the right question. Somehow I have a feeling that often we forget that.

DeleteThis is so wonderfully written, Ivana! I agree with the fact that some of our exercise regimes come to the point where it can get unhealthy--that happened to me two years ago and I developed some pretty unhealthy eating habits (not eating enough and overexercising) and the thing is that people told me I looked good!! It's crazy. Anyway, I really appreciated that you took time to make that explanation behind your lovely drawing. Keep on making things. You're amazing!
ReplyDeletethank you Ali for sharing that, it was exactly what I had in mind. Sometimes this world is a crazy place and we get all kind of advice, the good and the bad....ultimately we're the ones who have to take care of our health and we must take good care of ourselves.

DeletePhysical appearance and the need to look better or be better than is human nature but throwing people down for for it is sad. We are all built and created to look and be different, i think that is what makes the world a beautiful place.

DeleteHello dear Ivana, I agree absolutely to your words and I like the connection you made between the drawing and your post. Unfortunately are really most of the people nowadays not satisfy with their body and to be honest I often don't understand this. At least I try personally not to complain and to be thankful for what was given to me - including my body.

A very insightful set of observations here. Of course, there are entire industries that are reliant on convincing us that we are not actually ever 'enough' as we are - there's always something (that costs money) that we are told we 'need' in order to get a step closer to the ideal...
ReplyDeleteLove your angel showing the absurdity of worrying about wing size! brilliant.
