    These look similar to the 'moon' biscuits we make every Christmas - using my Czech grandmother's recipe. Do yours have ground almond in them? They taste so good when they are still warm and have just been dipped in icing sugar. Happy baking. And thank you for your recent very thoughtful comments - I really appreciate them.       I never really follow recipes, I always improvise...with varying results (sometimes catastrophic, sometimes good) but at least it makes the baking process interesting. I didn't put any almond in these ones, but that's a good idea... Traditionally we do put ground almond in many cakes.

In this post, I'll share with you a review of  The Count of Monte Cristo.  I don't go to theatre/movies often. In fact, years have been known to pass without me seeing a film on the big screen. With summer being in full spring, I caught myself thinking about iconic summer outfits. Do you know what came to my mind? Costumes/outfits worn by Monica Bellucci when she played Malena Scordia in an iconic Italian movie set on Sicily.   The costumes for that movie were designed by an acclaimed Italian costume designer Maurizio Millenotti and he outdone himself! Seeing that Malena is a historical movie, Maurizio choose quite timeless outfits and cuts that will ever go out of style. That fact makes Malena movie the perfect place to look for inspiration! THE ISLAND OF THE MISSING TREES BY ELIF SHAFAK (BOOK REVIEW AND RECOMMENDATION)

Today I shall review The Island of Missing Trees by Elif Shafak. I was actually gifted this book. What a wonderful present it proved to be! Published in 2021, this postmodern  novel  follows two  story lines and uses framed narration.  The Island of Missing Trees  tells the life story of a Greek Turkish couple and their adolescent daughter.  This novel examines and explores a number of topics such as identity, migration, immigrant life, war trauma, memory, love and family. It's an ambitious novel that examines serious topics with due respect and sensitivity . I read it months ago, but I remember it vividly. Honestly, I cried a lot while reading this novel. It really moved me greatly. In fact, that is probably why it took me this long to finish this book review. Mafia Queens of Mumbai (book ) vs. Gangubai Kathiawadi (film) review

Hello, dear readers! Today I shall review an Indian book Mafia Queens of Mumbai (  written by   Syed Hussain Zaidi and Jane Borges )  and a film Gangubai Kathiawadi ( directed by Sanjay Leela Bhasali .) . Is there a connection between the two? There certainly is. Both talk about life of a real person- Gangubai Kathiawadi, an Indian social activist with mafia ties born in 1907. However, in the book Gangubai is but a chapter, while in the movie she is the sole protagonist. Still,  Mafia Queens of Mumbai definitely inspired the movie Gangubai Kathiawadi.  I read the book before I watched the film, but the film is the reason why I read the book.  How come?
