Hello, there! Another day, another reading recommendation. Today I'd like to recommend a historical novel by Croatian author Ivan Aralica Ivan Aralica . The title could be translated as The Builder of an Inn. The novel is set during Napoleon wars. More precisely, the novel takes places during the French occupation of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The author is extremely knowledgeable about this period and exceptionally gifted at recreating past times. However, this novel is more focused on the psychological exploration of its main characters than on historical events or politics. I would dare to say this is the case with most (if not all) of Aralica's novels. Aralica is an author who focuses on the fates of 'common' people during turbulent historical times. Ivan Aralica's writing is more on the deep and philosophical side. He often writes about friendships formed between people belonging to different nations, religions and classes. Born in 1930, this author
With summer being in full spring, I caught myself thinking about iconic summer outfits. Do you know what came to my mind? Costumes/outfits worn by Monica Belluci when she played Malena Scordia in an iconic Italian movie set on Sicily. The costumes for that movie were designed by an acclaimed Italian costume designer Maurizio Millenotti and he outdone himself! Seeing that Malena is a historical movie, Maurizio choose quite timeless outfits and cuts that will ever go out of style. That fact makes Malena movie the perfect place to look for inspiration! Moreover, I feel that Monica Belluci's personal style is quite similar to Malena's (i.e. to the style of the character she is playing). There is definitely a Mediterranean lady feel about Malena/Monica Bellucci. What says summer better than Mediterranean and Sicily? Today we'll analyze Malena's style and see what we can learn from her. There is much to learn! Having analyzed looks that Monica wore in iconic Malena film, I&
Here it is: the first dress I have ever made entirely by myself. I did make some summer dresses in the past, but I had sown them without a pattern and a sewing machine and at any rate I wouldn't call them very accomplished. I mean, they weren't nearly as polished as this dress and they were not nearly as complex to make. I'm very happy with how this dress turned out. I'm even happier I took this sewing course in the first place because now I can make more dresses like this one! If you remember my November highlights post , you might remember that I've mentioned how I've recently finished a beginning fashion tailoring and sewing course with designer Stanka Zovko. I promised to show you the dress I made for my course 'graduation'. At the end of this lovely sewing course, you get to choose not only what you're going to make, but also the material and the pattern. The sewing pattern is typically chosen from one of the sewing magazines this designer
Hello, there! In this post, I'll show you my tips for styling statement balloon sleeves. I'll also add in a book review, because (to paraphrase) Oscar Wilde and Coco Chanel, a girl who should be four things: classy, fabulous, overdressed and overeducated. Wilde was known to be a dandy. The book I'm reviewing is titled Dandy, so there's a connection. Therefore, I'm combing these two quotes. Wilde famously said he makes up for being overdressed by being overeducated and Chanel said that a girl should be classy and fabulous. So, we shall combine outfit posts with book posts because being well read is basically the same as being well educated. Well, at least in my book. Mixing outfit posts with book posts, it's kind of more fun that way. I hope it's entertaining for you as well, because you can always fast forward the part of the post that's less compelling to you at the moment. Dandy was actually my first novel by Jan Guillou so I'm looking forwar
What can I say about today's outfit? Paring jeggings with a sweater dress (or if you wish you can also call it a long sweater) is no brainer. Doc martens are always a good choice and often I like to wear them like this, with socks rolled up over the boots. If the socks in question are wool ones, then one is pretty sure that his or her feet will be extremely warm. This beanie is also made from wool and what makes it very special is the fact that my grandmother made it for me. Wool is great because it helps us stay warm. Cold lowers our immunity (i.e. makes us immune system more vulnerable), so it is important to stay warm during Winter. To finish this look, I opted for this lovely necklace ( here ) and this elegant bag because I like how they create a contrast with this otherwise grunge outfit. Što mogu reći o današnjoj kombinaciji. Kombinacija tajica ( koje su imitacija jeansa) s džemper haljinom (možemo reći i s dugim džemperom) je nekako logična. Martensice su uvijek doba
According to the calendar, the summer has officially ended (Well, not really. I was corrected by Sheila , when I was writing this post there was still a week of summer ahead). As happy I am that Autumn is (almost) here, I'm still not ready to let summer go. I'm looking forward to Autumn season and I'm really happy and excited about the whole #backtoschool thing. Seriously, isn't it wonderful that the school has finally started? However, at the same time, I want the summer feeling to linger. I want to keep onto those summer vibes. Do you sometimes feel like that? I plan to continue to travel locally whenever I can. If you're sorry to see summer go, remember there are always ways to keep summer with you. For example, you can try to incorporate some of your summer or vacation habits into your daily routine: go swimming at a local pool if you don't have sea near you and etc. If you saved your vacation time for now, lucky you. I honestly think this is best time to
Happy Monday! How do you feel about Mondays? I'm warming up to them. Afterall, it is just another day. It can mean something good, perhaps even something great. Perhaps it is all a matter of perspective.... A fresh start of the week, new possiblities, new chances...but somewhere in back of my mind are all those Garfield images with 'I hate Monday' written all over them. My love for oversized cats is my great weakness. Maybe I need a cheerful song? Something with violine and cheerful lyrics...maybe this one from Alexander Rybak? One cat image to replace another? мой котик..котик..котик..котик........ Sretan ponedjeljak! Moja lju
It was raining when these photographs were taken and the weather was rather gloomy, but I didn't mind. Can you guess why? Recently I've talked about my love for patterns and prints. Well, I'm feeling quite happy right now because I received two dresses from dresslink. Both of them are exactly my cup of tea. It feels so nice to slip into a cute dress. It always make me feel more feminine and lady like. That would be all for today. Have a great weekend! Ugodan vikend! post update: Another way to wear this pattern dress. This polka dot pattern with roses is so chic! striped dress/haljina na prugice
Hello, there! In this post, I'll mix up fashion and art, books and style (as usual, you might say). Recently I have acquired a copy of Anna Karenina in Italian. I picked it up in my favourite vintage book shop in Split. More about that later, let's talk about the location and the outfit for a second. How do you like this styling? Looking at it now, it's giving me feminine vintage vibes. I just love its earthy colour palette. It matches the vintage cover quite nicely! I wasn't going for a full historical look, but m y outfit is mostly vintage, as I will soon explain in more detail soon. The location is restaurant Romanca in Mostar. How many times I have posted photographs from this restaurant? I've truly lost count, but I'm pretty sure January 2024 was the last time. I think it's the unique location of Romanca restaurant that appeals to me. This restaurant is located within a vineyard. It creates a wonderful atmosphere of peace and tranquility. Moreover, the
