FASHION ILLUSTRATION FRIDAY: HAT OBSESSED

Time for another Friday Fashion Illustration. Yes, it's Friday and I have a fresh new fashion drawing I made especially for this feature (that will hopefully become a super regular one on the blog). I've spent quite a lot of time drawing this fashion illustration one today, let me tell you that. As you can see, it depicts a beautiful lady wearing an oversize hat, the kind that is very trendy this summer. Should I name her? Let's name her Lucy. So, Lucy is also wearing an oversized purple blouse and a maxi blue dress. Not only is Lucy very comfortable in her oversized romantic styling but she is protected from the sun by a fabulous hat. What more could a gal want, right? In fact, Lucy is feeling quite confident and self-contend. With the help of editing fairies, she even ended up enjoying a free holiday in Croatia.

The medium for this drawing is coloured pencils on paper (the coloured pencil brand is not a known one and the paper is Strathmore paper.) As I said, these coloured pencils are no name, just some dirty cheap ones I picked at the supermarket...and do you know what? It doesn't really matter. In fact, sometimes it is humbling to work with art supplies that aren't of the best quality because then you can look at your art and say: this is all me, I can draw a great illustration even with the cheapest and worst pencils. The paper I used is wonderful, though. I'm only now realizing how important the paper can be. The quality of art supplies does mean something, but it is not crucial, not every time and certainly not in the beginning stages. I know that a lot of people don't do art because of the high price that comes with  quality art supplies, but trust me- you don't need to buy the most expensive things right away. You can take your time and buy the quality ones when it suits you. You don't have to buy everything right away either. First see what art medium you use the most, what you are best in and then make your purchases accordingly. The  art mantra is simple: keep working, keep drawing, keep practicing. I hope my words will inspire you to try your hands at art (or other creative projects).
Would you like to see the drawing process? Just in case you do, I've prepared a four stages collage for you. If you have a look, you'll be able to see all the stages of the colouring process. As you can see, first I sketched a general outline, then I started adding the details. Hat was my main preoccupation. I wanted to draw a big straw one. I also decided to add a bow, but I didn't decide on the colours until I actually started colouring. The outfit was secondary to me, I just wanted to draw something pretty and romantic, everything was about the hat and that mysterious vibe really. One of the reasons why I love hats is because they add a bit of intrigue and mystery to any outfit. Is it just me or can hats make us look so ladylike and elegant? I especially like to wear hats in the summer because there is that added bonus of sun protection. Anyhow, this was a fun illustration to make. The hat turned out well and I'm really happy with how the face turned out, lips in particular. One of the challenges was to draw a face that was partly in shade (because of this gigantic hat), I hope I did alright with that, I can't really tell. I don't have much experiencing drawing shade on a face.

  6. Dear Ivana, another wonderful fashion illustration! I love the story you told additional to this lady Lucy :) And I'm very surprised that your experience showed you that it doesn't matter what kind of pencil you use and that especially the pater seems to be important for creating arts!
I love how Lucy wears the hat and that you describe her as self-confident and that she feels comfortable in her maxi look!
