I'm taking you with me to Drvenik, Croatia!

Have you ever been to Drvenik? This small coastal Croatian village with only 500 inhabitants is located in vicinity of a better known Makarska cit. Makarska is an extremely popular touristic destination and as such needs no introduction, but this little village might escape your notice. First mentioned in the 13th century, Drvenik started its life as a settlement under Biokovo mountain. The original village was actually located a pretty distance from the sea. Why you might ask? Because of the pirates. It was common practice in those days. You'll find many villages in the Mediterranean area (Spain, Italy, Portugal and so on) that are located miles from the sea. It is only in the recent centuries that smaller settlements started to be build so near the sea. Back in the day, if you were a coastal village or a city  and you didn't have a big ass wall (like Dubrovnik for example) or a mighty army, you were sure to attract pirates. One of my ancestors from island Hvar managed to outsmart pirates and stop their attack using a clever trick but I'll tell you that story some other time. Anyhow, that original 'Drvenik' village was abandoned years ago but you can still visit it if you don't mind a bit of hiking.  Alternatively, you can hang out in present day Drvenik, which is definitely a  more touristic place.

Since I love the sea so much, I must say that I'm happy that Drvenik (like so many other places) became a coastal settlement. There is plenty of accommodation if you're looking for a place to say ( 3 hotels and a lot of private accommodation) so that's always nice. You'd probably have to book in advance if you're thinking about staying here during the summer, though. There are some restaurants (I think! I know I saw some), but I haven't tried them yet so I can't give you any gastro tips. One of the sight to visit in Drvenik is the Church of Saint George that dates to the 14 century. Most churches in Croatia are super old, beautiful and historical. They have so many of them that they sometimes  refer to two centuries old churches as 'new'. Even if you're not religious or cultural, you might want to visit these old churches for their historical value. If you prefer the nature, you can always go for a long walk. This costal village attracts tourists for a good reason. It has a gorgeous promenade. In addition, Drvenik has some very pretty beaches. I took a swim here on the main beach (featured in this post) a few times in the past (not when these photographs were taken obviously).

I'm taking you with me to Drvenik, Croatia!

I've been to Drvenik multiple times because it is also a place where you can catch a ferry for island Hvar and I've done that about a zillion of times. In case you didn't know, I'm half an islander myself because my mother originates from Hvar, this magical Croatian island that has an amazing history & culture but annoyingly some people remember it only as a place where prince Harry used to drink the night away before he settled down with his beautiful Megan. Anyway, let's go for a little walk together. I'll show you around, you'll tell me what you think about Drvenik. Does that sounds good to you? It sounds good to me. Why not? It's only a quarter to midnight. What else would I do? Certainly not sleep like normal people.

The outfit I wore was super casual. We actually didn't even plan to stay in Drvenik for that long, we were heading to island Hvar,  but there was no place for our car in the ferry (we were the last car left), so we had to wait for three hours for another ferry to take us to island time. It only takes half and hour for the ferry to make its way from Drvenik to Sućuraj on island Hvar, but during the spring it doesn't go non-stop like it does during the summer. We took advantage of that waiting time to take a stroll. As I said, I've been here often so I know my way around. I'm also used to having to wait for another ferry because during summer it can get really crowded. The ferry can take only as many cars and sometimes you have to wait for the next time. Should that happen to you, I recommend you take a swim. It's the best thing to do, right? Or just sit in one of the cafes and order an espresso. When life gives you lemons, order an expresso.

Don't you just love Palm trees? I know I do. When I see them, I feel at home. Near Agave trees and Palms I always feel like I'm back in Croatia, which is kind of ironic since both of these plants are native to South and North America (Agave are native to Mexico if I'm not mistaken). Still, we often connect them to the Mediterranean. Isn't that interesting? Did you know that Agave only blossom only in 100 years? I was incredibly lucky to be present when they've blossoming in Split city and I've even managed to capture it on camera here. Speaking of trees, I also love to see pine tress (who doesn't?) near the sea. There is something lovely about the combination of the two. Even in pine trees aren't the best solution when a wild fire happens, they are beautiful to behold.  That would be all for today. Thank you for reading. I hope you've enjoyed this little travel post of mine. Until next time !

  11. Sometimes it seems to be really an advantage when you didn't get a place on the ferry :) I see the village you visited by this coincidence is really beautiful and I see indeed old. It was new for me that there are many villages miles away from the sea and this one is more an exception.
I'm convinced this village is worth to visit and I like your casual outfit. You are always dressed very well, dear Ivana.

    Bellissime foto, Ivana! :)

  15. Don't you hate it when the world recognize a place because of an infamous incident instead of its true beauty? I love this little 'tour' you took us through. xx

  16. What a beautiful place! Croatia may be just the last resort left for the Westerners who want to retire to the Mediterraneans - everything else is getting overly crowded and therefore expensive! Like you, I love ferry rides and the sea in any weather (I've JUST came back from my neighborhood park which is on the sea, with that historic lighthouse that I sent you on a postcard). Pine trees say home to me! My hometown name can be translated as "pine forest town" - Сосновоборск. I love seeing conifers from my window here!
So glad that you wear earrings and hair pieces. Enjoy! <3

    1. thank you Natalia. I think there are some foreigners who choose to do that, but not as many as in Spain for example where there are special cities/ villages reserved for those wanting to retire there.

  19. You make me smile so much telling me (well, I feel like you were telling me!) the story of the coastal village in drvenik. It's so stunning and that Agave tree, what a beauty! Just like you hahha. I really must say that I love looking at you sitting on the huge tree branch. Trees are something special, isn't it? They have such a grounding presence and immense strength and flexibility. What you said about the pine and palm trees also perks my attention as I love these trees so much! Tree aside, I think that's super splendid that you've taken a swim in that stunning ocean water. I didn't know about the Prince story so phew! Ivana, your outfit is just something I'd love to wear as the boots aren't that threatening hehehe as they're without the killer heels that you pull off so gracefully :) x
